What's with the laptop fan if it makes a strange buzzing noise?

Ever since yesterday I would boot up my laptop like normal, but once it got up to the main desktop screen the fan would make a strange buzzing noise but eventually it would stop after a few minutes and run like normal. What’s up?
I researched other answers and saw that it could also possibly be it’s dirty? I’m hoping that’s all because I dunno if I can afford replacing it if it’s something else.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and its pushing two years old. I was away for to months abd came back adn it worked good as usually but now suddenly my fan is freakisly loud!

It honestly sounds like a car motor. I sounds loose and maybe its hitting again the plastic of the laptop.

Does anyone know whats going on? Or any advice?

My laptop fan has been doing it for months! I didn’t bother with it til now when I thought I should find out why it does it!
I have had my laptop for about a year and a half. The constant noise is not due to age as my sister has the same one but she got hers before I got mine.
Literally, as I turn it on, the noise starts and continues until I turn it off, what is it and is there anyway way I can prevent or even stop this from occuring?

The pads I have seen typically provide 30 cfm. Is that enough to totally replace the failed integral fan?
I am assuming the slowness of my laptop is due to the lack of cooling.

To get to the fan turn the laptop upside down and remove any screws that could be holding the skeleton together. If it won’t come apart there is still a screw holding it from the back.

You probably need to look into a new fan. Be careful where and what kind of oil you put on the fan.

How to detect whether my laptop fan is moving properly or not. What should be the actual speed of a fan.

There is no defined speed to a fan, they do have there maximum rpm, but the speed is controlled by how much the computer is working. To check if your fan is working the easiest way to do it is to put your hand near all the vents and feel if air is going in or out, if it is then its working. A harder way would be to open up your computer, but that might be messy for you to do (so I would recommend that you opt out of that option)

The actual speed will vary depending on the make of the fan etc. Some Macbook fans spin in excess of 4500rpms, while the dual fans in my Toshiba Satellite A75 spin at about 1800rpms each.

You can try installing Speedfan http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php and see if your laptop has the sensors in the motherboard that will report the speed of your fan. That way you can see what it is currently running at. Mind you, not every laptop comes with sensors that you can monitor with an aftermarket program. You might have to log into your BIOS at boot and examine the system temp and fan speed there.

As to what speed YOUR laptop fan should spin at, without information like the make and model of the laptop, it is impossible to say.

I cleaned my toshiba satellite l305d-s5934 fan with canned air. I didnt open the laptop so I clean it threw the vents but when I turn it on the fan wasn’t running and it shut off on me.

What probably happened, was that large layer of dust and debris that has gathered over the years, has now been blown INTO the fan itself, and is keeping it from spinning…. you see, this is why a laptop should be taken apart to be cleaned. You *may* be able to free up the fan by using the canned air and blowing it into the fan itself… with the laptop off, of course… but you may have to take it to a shop to have it cleaned right.

Never heard of something like this few theories on the spot; You blew the air from the air duster the opposite way the fan spins thus somehow disrupting the motor I don’t know if that’s even possible , Or maybe your fan had just met it’s last days after that shut off to clean it. Maybe the Fan connector was loose over time and disconnected from the massive force of air you put on it IF it’s positioned like that, try checking your bios fan settings , if all else fails take it to a professional in your local area.

You definitely will have to open it up, unfortunately. There is no way to clean the fan without being inside. Duster cans clean a little bit out of keyboards, but even with them they blow most of the stuff inside the computer. You really do need to clean the fan too, as Toshibas are prone to overheating, which can ruin the system. It might sound silly, but take every tiny screw out of the bottom (be sure to not lose any) and you’ll get in where you need to go. If I’m wrong, put them all back and pay Geek Squad, even though they’re overpriced. I hope this helps. Good luck.

are you talking about a laptop cooler? it all depends on the size and number of fans and remember cooler fans are not on and off, they on full time as long as laptop on. lets say standard cooler with one fan little bigger than d cpu fan inside.
it should reduce the battery life of a laptop which ran 4hrs idle to about 3 to 3.5 hrs idle

The battery life depends on how much power the battery holds, example 4500mAh and the laptop lasts 2 hours for balanced power consume, 100% – 0% without the cooling pad. Work out how long can you use the battery before it runs out.

4500 / 120 = 37.5 37.5mAh per minute. 60minutes is 1 hour.

37.5 x 60 = 2250 + 500 = 2750 2250mAh per hour. Add 500 because the USB port is being used for the Cooling pad.
Add 37.5 several times until you reach the battery capacity level. Each time 37.5 is added, it is classed as 1 minute. Which is ruffly 1hour 30mins – 1hour 40mins.

500 / 60 = 8.333333333333333mAh per minutes. Cooling pad.

37.5 + 8.333333333333333 = 45.83333333333333mAh per minute. Laptop & Cooling pad.

Add 45.83333333333333 several times until you reach to the battery capacity level.
So it is ruffly 1hour 38mins of battery life you will get before the laptop cuts out.

So mate the cooling fan uses 500mAh per hour of power. It is simular to the CD/DVD drive, you might loose 30mins of battery life. If you want the battery to last for 2hours, you need a battery that hold more Miliamps or power shall I say.

How would one go about replacing a fan in a laptop and pricing?
Lately the fan has been making alot of noise, so either a part has broken or something has gotten stuck within the fan.

You could try blowing it out with some compressed air, that might alleviate the sound for a little bit.

What you need to do is find a service manual for your model of laptop online. I know I have found several for IBM laptops they have at work. In there, you should be able to find the part # that you need to find. Search that online, often there are companies that take broken laptops similar to yours and sell parts such as fans and drives and the like. If you’re lucky you should be able to find a part. Otherwise you might need to go to a retailer to get them to order you a new one. If you’re armed with a part number, it makes their job a lot easier.

If you are good at taking stuff apart and putting it back together, you may be able to replace the fan yourself. If not, you can either get a computer shop to do it or someone who is good at that stuff. I took my Ibook apart and replaced the hard drive with instructions I found online. It took a while and was scary but it was possible.

Sounds to me that the fan(s) are control by a chip on the board using PWM. (Pulse Width Modulation)
So when the inside temp gets to a certain temp it turns on the fan to cool it down, and when it cools down below the trigger point it turns it back off….
In otherwords it’s running cool enough that it doesn’t need the fan on anymore…

If the laptop won’t turn on, it’s not because of the fan, it’s because there’s something else wrong…more than likely with the motherboard. That’s what controls the fans that’s connected to it.

I believe in your second sentence, the opposite is true, the fans aren’t coming on because the laptop won’t come on.
Probably nothing wrong with it. I have an HP laptop and the fan blows when needed and pretty well turns off when it’s not needed.
Playing an intense 3D game or something that got my processor hot would make mine blow so that you could actually hear the air blowing out.
So, I believe your fan is thermally-controlled and kicking on and off when needed.

Sounds like your fan is burnt out. Stop using your laptop or you will overheat the motherboard. It should be that much to fix…get an estimate ASAP!

Ok ive seen this thing at wal~mart that like mounts under you laptop and fans it…look at stores like best buy or you can use a small fan under it…i had something like that rigged once…also if you AC is running then put the laptop over an airvent ( in the summer when the Ac is cold lol)
